Symptoms

The following KB will address the timing out issues that are encountered when creating a new field or updating dictionary entries on a very large table. When there is a schema change or a table alter on a large table, it will usually cause a time out issue because there is a specific Transaction Quota Rule called "UI Transaction" that cancels UI Transactions that last for an allotted amount of time depending on the Maximum Duration field value.

Resolution

(****Disclaimer****: The following action should only be taken on an instance where a field is being manually created from the UI. These changes should never be implemented on a production instance).

To apply filtered conditions or make the "UI Transaction" inactive do the following:

Inactivating the quota rule:

  1. Navigate to Transaction Quota Rules
  2. Query where name is "UI Transactions"
  3. Click on the UI Transaction record and uncheck active

    Uncheck Active

  4. Save
  5. Create new local update set and make current update set
  6. Delete the field

Applying filtered conditions to bypass UI timeout on field/table creations:

  1. Navigate to Transaction Quota Rules
  2. Query where name is "UI Transactions"
  3. Click on the UI Transaction record and apply filter conditions where URL does not contain "sys_dictionary" OR URL does not contain sys_db_object

  4. Save
  5. Create new local update set and make it current update set
  6. Delete the field
