On the Hardware Models page, under the Asset embedded list, the option to insert a new row appears to provide an alternative method for creating a new asset for the current hardware model. However, the option does not work that way.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go to

  2. Click an asset name (for example, Alienware M17x).

  3. Go to the Assets tab.

  4. Double-click "Insert a new row" at the bottom of the list.

  5. Provide an Asset Tag name and click the checkmark to save.

  6. Click Update to save the cmdb_hardware_product_model record.

  7. Click the newly created asset record link.

  8. Note the following:

    • Class is Asset instead of the expected Hardware.
    • Model Category is read only and not editable.

As a workaround, insert the new CI via the Configuration Item list. This does not prevent creating a CI in a class that is not covered by the CI classes defined in the model's model categories. For more information, see the product documentation topic Create assets.
