Dot-walked field clears when double-clicking a reference field to add a new row in an embedded list

KB Summary by Now Assist

Description

On an Incident form with a reference field (A) and a dot-walked field (B) and an embedded list on the form with a reference field (a) that points to the same table as the other reference (A), when inserting a row on that embedded list by double-clicking the empty reference field (a), the dot-walked field (B) clears. This does not occur if you double-click another field in the list that is not referenced on the form.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Navigate to Incident > Open and open an incident.

  2. Right-click in the form header and choose Configure > Form Layout.

  3. Use the slushbucket to add configuration_item.manufacturer (in some versions of the form it's known as affected_ci) to the form layout underneath configuration_item and click Save.

  4. Add Problem > Task embedded list to the form underneath the two configuration items and click Save.

  5. Test the problem by setting the Configuration item field to a value that has an associated manufacturer.

Note that configuration_item.manufacturer has updated to reflect the dot-walked field.

  6. Double-click underneath configuration_item on the embedded list.

Note that configuration_item.manufacturer has been cleared.

Workaround

After carefully considering the severity and frequency of the issue, and risk of attempting a fix, it has been decided not to address this issue. We do not make this decision lightly, and we apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions regarding this problem, contact ServiceNow Customer Support.
